Steven's story
From shy to soap star: Steven has found confidence and community at Burwell Print Centre.
"I have been working as a printer at Burwell Print a long time. Back in 2005, I was studying at Cambridge Regional College (CRC) for one day a week and was looking for something more to fill my time. That’s when I was offered a placement at Burwell Print to help fill my week with things of interest to do.
Initially, I started off with one day, but when I finished at CRC this changed to two, then three days each week. Now I am back to two days a week as I pursue other interests elsewhere.
When I started at the print centre, I was very nervous, shy, and reserved as it was a complete change from my normal routine. Now, I am a more outgoing, confident individual who still (at times) gets nervous when meeting new people for the first time, but that soon passes though.
During my time at the centre, I have met many colleagues, staff and printers, and most of them have left me with lasting memories. Some of them are real characters that you just cannot forget. A few of the printers I have known for longer as I first met them at school or CRC.
Over the years, with the support of the staff and other printers, I have been able to take on more challenges and goals to improve my capability within the centre and can now carry out many of the tasks required of me, many of these independently.
I really enjoy working at Burwell Print as it is a great community and place to be. It must be because some of the staff have left and then decided to come back. I look forward to going there each week and hope that it will continue for many years. All the staff are really kind and caring and always make me feel at ease.
One thing I would like to be is a soap star, but right now, I must contend with making soap for Hidden Treasures."
